Control Valve - The Versatile Control Element
Control valves are the valves used to control pressure, volume, liquid level and flow direction in a fluid transmission system. The device is capable of moulding flow at different degrees ranging from a minimum flow to the full capacity in response to a signal from an external control device. Being the most critical part of any control loop, the control valve is also known as "the final control element".
Usually, the most important part in hydraulic machinery is directional control valves. It has the ability to restrict and permit the actual flow. There are two types of directional control valves- hydraulic and pneumatic. While hydraulic directional control valve focuses on liquid working flow, pneumatic directional control valve is meant to control gaseous working fluid. Most of the industries purchase the control valves on the basis of few static specifications like pressure ratings, flow capacity and fluid type. There are certain dynamic characteristics of a control valve which need to be kept in mind before making the final purchase decision. A right kind of choice will always be helpful to mitigate process-control-related problems. Some of the characteristics include: process-side error, stroking speed, positioning resolution, overshoot, installed gain, friction, dead band, and hysteresis and load sensitivity.
Control valves have few common features such as self-lubricating, chemical resistance and wear resistance. The quality of a good control valve can be judged through its temperature and pressure level that ranges from 60 degree F to + 400 degree F.
The ability of control valves depend on lot of factors. If the quality of control valves is good then it is highly useful to reduce process variability. There are three important areas of design considerations such as valve response time, dead band and actuator/positioned design.
