how do front panel sata ports work?
I am talking about the sata ports such as the sata ports on the ultra media dashboard found here: http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=52&pPath=470&productID=470
I am confused at how these work. Obviously you would use the cable to connect the hdd to the port. But I think the sata hdd needs a spearate power cable so how are these ports useful if there isn't anywhere to plug in a power cable?
I also saw one of these front panels with an eSATA port. How is eSATA and different?
You are right, before they had esata, there was no way to power up the hard drives except if you made a live power cable extended from inside your PC (with an on/off switch). Then you can connect the sata hdd to the ports in the picture and use the power cable you made to turn it on. This wasn't very practical so they made eSata.
The addition of esata is similar an external usb hard drive. Esata enclosures are sold with an AC outlet adapter. So basically all you do is connect the esata enclose (which holds the sata hard drive) to the esata port and turn it on the same way you would do now for an external USB enclosure.
