How egg recall is affecting South Bay
In the Bay Area, it's breakfast as usual.
Despite a salmonella scare that has sickened nearly 1,300 people nationwide and led grocers across the country to pull millions of fresh eggs off shelves, many Bay Area grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants say they have been largely unaffected by the recall, which stems from problems at two large egg producers in Iowa.
And some South Bay businesses are even seeing an upside.
Fred Zanotto of Zanotto's Markets in San Jose said Monday that he's had some customers ask about his eggs' safety, and he has assured them he buys only from California sources. The only other effect for him so far of the scare: "I've actually had to order more eggs, is all, probably 15 to 20 percent," as shoppers seek out smaller, local chains.
Likewise, Ed Olivera, owner of Olivera Foods, an egg distributor based in San Jose's Berryessa neighborhood, said his delivery orders increased about 20 percent last week after news of the recall broke out.
In response to the demand, he increased his wholesale prices 25 cents per dozen eggs. "We follow the market up or down," said Olivera, whose chickens are mostly housed in Stockton.
Nationally, more than half a billion eggs have been recalled for fears of salmonella. Local supermarket chains including Safeway and Save Mart, which also operates Lucky and Food Maxx stores, said any recalled eggs have already been pulled off market shelves. A Trader Joe's spokeswoman said no eggs in the company's Northern California stores were part of the recall. The Whole Foods chain also said eggs at its stores were not affected.
At Peters' Bakery in the Alum Rock neighborhood, which uses nearly 1,100 eggs from Olivera Foods every couple of days, the egg recall "hasn't affected us at all," said Margaret Aguiar, a cake decorator.
And Eleni Zafiris of Bill's Cafe, which has restaurants in Willow Glen, the Rose Garden and on The Alameda, said there's been no trouble getting enough eggs, and few customers have even asked about the situation. "One or two people -- that's it -- in all these days," she said.
California egg producers could benefit long term from the scare, said Marcus Benedetti, president of dairy and egg distributor Clover Stornetta, which sells about 273,000 dozen eggs a month in California. He also said he expects egg prices to rise somewhat in response to the shortage stemming from the recall in Iowa.
"Hopefully it resonates with consumers, if they do live in California, that it makes sense to buy and support local California eggs," he said.
In response to recent publicity about egg-borne salmonella, there will be a "Good Egg" booth at the Eat Real Festival that kicks off Friday at Oakland's Jack London Square, said Anya Fernald, the festival's founder. Several egg farmers will be on hand to talk about egg safety, local egg production and how shoppers can seek out "source-verified" foods.
"Eggs are what you eat for breakfast; it's what you feed your kids," Fernald said. People get scared when there's a big recall like this one, she said, but her goal is to "take that scare and turn it into something that will make things better in the future."
