Automotive Part Maintenance Using an Ultrasonic Cleaner
If you're into classic automobile restoration or simply need to maintain your engine you might want to consider adding an ultrasonic cleaner to your arsenal. Small, cheap and easy to use, an ultrasonic cleaner is no longer the domain of the professionals. Today it is widely used by amateurs and hobbyists the world over for cleaning applications as diverse as surgical instruments and archaeological finds.
Originally ultrasonic cleaning was the domain of scientists who needed precision cleaning of laboratory equipment and tools. Nowadays, this inconspicuous but powerful piece of kit will likely be found in almost every town. If you have a mechanic or a watchmaker, a hospital or a factory, it's likely that there will be at least one ultrasonic cleaner.
Instead of employing a scrubbing brush and a variety of solvent degreasers to do your work, you can now leave it all to the ultrasonic cleaner. An ultrasonic cleaner is essentially just a tank filled with water. This is often complemented with a mild cleaning solution as well if the thing you're cleaning is extra dirty. On a more technical level, the cleaning unit uses an ultrasonic generator to convert low frequency mains electricity (tens of Hz) into electricity with an ultrasonic frequency (hundreds of kHz). This ultrasonic electricity is then converted by a piezoelectric transducer into sound energy (also with an ultrasonic frequency). The ultrasound then travels through the liquid contained in the tank and causes a process called cavitation. Cavitation is where microscopic bubbles expand as the sound wave approaches them and then collapse as the sound wave passes them by. The bubble collapse releases the energy that is used to clean, and as the sound is such high frequency, cavitation occurs extremely fast and on a massive scale. You won't hear the individual bubbles collapsing, just a gentle fizzing sound as it works its magic.
The small size and large number of these bubbles allow the ultrasonic cleaner to penetrate further than the line of sight into all the crevices and cracks that occur on the particular component. That means this method of cleaning is great for old engines where microscopic cracks might exist in engine parts. Further, it will clean in all the places you can't reach or you can't see. Pitted or heavily textured surfaces will also benefit from the action of the ultrasonic cleaner, which will get even the roughest surface clean.
In addition to their ability to clean so thoroughly, ultrasonic cleaners are more time-efficient than conventional scrubbing and solvent use. Further, they are able to clean multiple items at the same time.
Ultrasonic cleaners can vary widely in size and can accommodate a range of engine sizes and component shapes. Buy a heavy duty model and you'll almost be able to fit your whole engine in. More realistically it may take several batches before you've managed to get the whole engine as good as new. They're ideal for almost everything, from carburetors and crankshafts, to gears and diffs. If you want to add years to the life of your engine, look no further.
