can anyone tell me why heavy duty vehicles use spur gears instead of helical gears in manual transmissions?
i thought helical gears were better when it came to torque and higher performance.
Spur gears transfer the torque at 180 degrees with no side load. All of the stress is on the gears and not the thrust washers, case or shaft.
In a heavy duty vehicle, this allows for a lighter, stronger transmission where gear noise really isn't a factor.
On a helical gear, there is a significant amount of side force because of the gear angles. In lighter duty vehicles, this effect is out weighed by the quieter operation and greater wear area - but it also limits the torque which can be transferred.
