Why is it not possible to use a set of beveled gears to convert a vertical shaft engine to a horizontal one?
I would like to use a lawn mower engine to make a go kart, but of course it uses a vertical shaft. Why cannot I just convert it to a horizontal output using gears at a 45 degree angle? (like this: http://pustaka.ictsleman.net/how/g/gear/gear-bevel.jpg) It seems possible to me, but I have not seen this solution mentioned anywhere else, so there must be a problem with it. Thanks a ton.
It's perfectly doable, just expensive. A gearbox will cost you more than a horizontal shaft engine, so you might as well just buy the horizontal shaft engine in the first place. Not to mention the room required and some way of mounting it all up.
