Calculate the mass percent of aluminum in the alloy?
An alloy containing aluminum is analyzed. All the aluminum reacts with 212mL of 0.493M HCl in the 2.5g sample of alloy. (Assume that the only component of the alloy that reacts with HCl is aluminum, and that the products of reaction are hydrogen gas and aluminum ions)
to calculate mol of HCl
212 mL = 0.212 L, so 0.212 x 0.493 = 0.1045 mol HCl
according to the reaction 2Al + 6HCl --> 2AlCl3 + 3H2 (AlCl3 exists as Al and Cl ions is solution, so it's all good.)
the mole ratio of HCl to Al (aluminum) is 6:2, so 0.1045 x 2 / 6 = 0.03484 mol Al
calculate mass of Al in alloy using the molar mass of Al
molar mass of Al is 26.98 g/mol, so 0.03484 x 26.98 = 0.9399 g Al
to calculate mass % of Al in alloy
(0.9399 / 2.5) x 100 = 37.60% or according to the rules of sig figs the answer is 38% (which is the final answer)
